Comparing Lionel Messi and Gerd Muller is like comparing a 2012 Mercedes-Benz S600 with a 1972 Benz 250. They were both the best at their time, but in 1972 Football was so basic, and undeveloped that it was much easier to score against a defense. I'm certain that if Lionel Messi were to play against the teams that Gerd Muller scored 85 goals against, Messi would have scored 200+ goals. Messi is a legend right now he is the best, but there will be definitely better football players in the future.

That is a nice point Darish21 has mentioned. I think as Jacson commented on another post earlier, Gerd Muller himself congratulates this record to Messi and he says that Messi is deserved this record. And nobody can deny that Gerd Muller himself was an AWESOME player at his time :)

dariush 21 you are mistaken football with basketball. You cannot compare a player from now to another player some 40 years ago and come to a false conclusion. What you said does not make sense at all. What I see here is that Gerd Muller is a much better player because he scored more goald in less games. Dont you think they should have considered the number of games ? Other thing is that I dont see consistancy in Messi's games. In world cup 2012 Messi did not score a single goal for Argentina. Basically, Messi could not have existed back then because everybody was playing with same paste. The training was not so great for a player to look like a genious even though Gerd Muller and Pele were both geniouses back then.

Dariush21: muller played in the strongest league in Europe back then and teams were more even compare to laliga now adays , i bet if messi played then he couldn't have even kicked the 70's style ball which were heavy and really hard to control and when they got wet it was like kicking a medicine ball besides the pitch quality are not comparable, at all .. it definitely wasn't easier to score, besides muller didn't take penalties messi took 25 and nither muller took drugs and growth hormones ,, you know they say they dont make cars like they used to
