Chelsea landed the biggest confirmed deal of the latest market moves, agreeing a British-record £117 million fee with Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers. The England attacker chose Chelsea over Arsenal, ending Arsenal’s pursuit. Chelsea are not finished there either, with Trevoh Chalobah closing in on a £27 million move to Como as business continues at both ends of the squad.

Roma were similarly active. The Serie A club tied down Gianluca Mancini and Bryan Cristante to new contracts, then followed that by submitting a €46 million bid to West Ham for Crysencio Summerville. Roma’s interest in Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho also remains live, with the possibility of signing both wide players still open.

England will face France in the World Cup third-place match without Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham after Thomas Tuchel left both out amid a fresh injury problem. England dropped into the playoff after a semifinal defeat to Argentina, though Tuchel said he had no regrets over his selections for that match.

Preseason brought a mixed set of early talking points elsewhere. Manchester United opened with a 1-0 loss to Wrexham, while Andrey Santos made his debut following his £50 million move from Chelsea. Bologna’s first game under Domenico Tedesco ended in a 4-0 defeat to Arminia Bielefeld, with Jonathan Rowe sent off for violent conduct, and Juventus suffered an injury scare when new signing Jeff Ekhator was forced off on his debut.
