Manchester City responded to the noise around their Premier League financial case with a 3-0 win at Anfield, beating Liverpool in their first match since the club was found guilty of breaching league rules. City manager Enzo Maresca says his players handled the scrutiny well. Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola argued the game turned on Ryan Gravenberch’s red card, insisting his side had been the better team until the dismissal and saying he did not agree with the decision.

The fallout did not end there. Gianluigi Donnarumma was involved in angry exchanges with Liverpool fans after the match, first in the crowd and later in the tunnel, where he had to be escorted away.

At Manchester United, the uncertainty around Michael Carrick continued after what has been described as the club’s worst start to a season since 1986. Antonio Conte has featured heavily in the discussion over a possible replacement, but no change has been confirmed, with other reports indicating United are sticking with Carrick for now. United’s focus now shifts to the Champions League and a meeting with Atletico Madrid, with Diego Simeone offering his assessment before Tuesday’s game.

In Serie A, Atalanta ended a three-game losing run by beating Venezia 3-1. Franck Kessie opened the scoring and Nikola Krstovic struck twice as Atalanta raced into a 3-0 lead inside 30 minutes. The victory came at a cost, though, with Giorgio Scalvini and Raoul Bellanova both forced off injured, while Eljif Elmas will miss the trip to Milan.
