Man City undeterred by Newcastle's mind-blowing Tonali price tag as confidence grows over blockbuster move
Manchester City remain firmly in the hunt for Tottenham target Sandro Tonali and are increasingly confident they would be the Italian's destination of choice should he decide to remain in the Premier League this summer, TEAMtalk can reveal.
Arsenal have completed the signing of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United in a £75 million deal, with the Brazil midfielder agreeing a four-year contract that includes an option for a further year. It is the standout move in a busy spell of transfer activity, with Liverpool close to bringing in Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan with an option to buy, while Manchester City have agreed a deal for Argentina goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille.
Newcastle, now under head coach Matthias Jaissle, opened his reign with a 2-1 friendly win over Valencia as Yoane Wissa scored both goals. Manchester United were held 1-1 by Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg, where summer signing Youri Tielemans made his debut. The game also brought an injury concern for United after Mason Mount was forced off, with manager Michael Carrick addressing the issue afterward.
Chelsea produced one of the sharper preseason displays, beating Milan 3-0 with Joao Pedro scoring twice and Moises Caicedo adding a volley. Brighton matched that scoreline against Roma, a result Gian Piero Gasperini called a horrible performance. Inter beat Juventus 2-1 in Perth through goals from Federico Dimarco and Andy Diouf, though coach Cristian Chivu said his side are not ready and admitted he did not like the second half.
Away from the friendlies, Roma secured Lorenzo Pellegrini on a new contract through June 2027. In Scotland, the Scottish FA has identified a preferred candidate for its vacant head coach role and hopes to make an appointment within two weeks.
