Manchester United opened their Champions League campaign in style, beating Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford for their biggest win in the competition since 2020. The result sets up the Manchester derby as United wait on the fitness of one winger, while Michael Carrick has two players back available and used his pre-match media duties to address both Marcus Rashford and his own future.
There is plenty of movement around Manchester beyond the result. At City, Ruben Dias spoke about the changes following Pep Guardiola’s departure, while Enzo Maresca provided an update on Nico O’Reilly before the derby. City have also completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez after the midfielder submitted two written transfer requests at Chelsea.
Tottenham’s week was defined by a deal that never happened. Richarlison refused a move to Vasco da Gama after failing to agree personal terms on a short-term contract, despite Spurs being ready to accept a €20 million offer. Roberto De Zerbi said the forward’s omission from the squad was the result of his own decisions, but backed the quality of Tottenham’s summer signings, including Sandro Tonali. There was better news for Spurs with Lucas Bergvall, who had appeared close to leaving, signing a new long-term contract.
At Arsenal, Mikel Arteta revealed he deliberately made pre-season harder by delaying transport, disrupting meals, and increasing dressing room temperatures to prepare his squad for tougher situations during the season. Arsenal also confirmed a new signing, though concerns remain off the field, with staff fearing job cuts just four months after the club’s title win as consulting work continues and cost-cutting measures are considered.
