Manchester United’s poor start deepened with a 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, a result made harder by Leny Yoro’s red card. The loss extended the pressure around Michael Carrick after a winless run and quickly spilled beyond the pitch. Lisandro Martinez openly criticized technical director Jason Wilcox and took aim at INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, saying the club were not properly backed in the summer.
Inter’s European problems look even more severe. A 4-3 home defeat to Club Brugge left the Italian side on zero points from two games, with Nicolò Tresoldi scoring a hat-trick at San Siro. Cristian Chivu said Inter’s recent Champions League record is a real concern after seven defeats in their last eight matches in the competition, admitting frustration took over and his team became frantic and unbalanced.
Napoli also endured a damaging night, losing 3-1 at Villarreal despite taking the lead through Amir Rrahmani. Max Allegri said there was tension with Kevin De Bruyne and warned that without enough work from midfield, the team will struggle. Napoli director Giovanni Manna said standards must improve in the Champions League. The match also marked Scott McTominay’s first start since heart surgery.
Away from the games, Arsenal announced the death of life president Ken Friar at 92 after 70 years of service. Milan said Alexis Saelemaekers underwent successful ankle surgery in Amsterdam and will be sidelined for several months, while Aston Villa manager Unai Emery confirmed Matteo Ruggeri is expected to miss more than one month with a hamstring injury.
