Manchester United’s troubles deepened with a 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid, leaving them winless in five matches. They conceded in the opening minute and finished with 10 men after Leny Yoro was sent off. The aftermath quickly shifted to Lisandro Martinez, who issued a statement after his outburst and said he still wants to “give everything I have for this badge.” Senior players have backed Martinez over what they see as a lack of ambition from the hierarchy.
The wildest night came in Rome, where Real Madrid turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 win over Roma on Jose Mourinho’s return to the Stadio Olimpico. Madrid scored three times in the final seven minutes, with all three goals coming from corners. Donyell Malen struck twice for Roma, but the hosts were hit by injury problems as Manu Koné went off after 17 minutes with an apparent muscle issue and Paulo Dybala was later forced off.
Aston Villa produced the most emphatic result of the round, thrashing Fenerbahce 6-0 at Villa Park for the biggest European win in the club’s history. Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley both scored twice. Liverpool made it two wins from two with a 6-3 victory at LASK, powered by Bradley Barcola’s first senior hat-trick and his first Liverpool goals. Arsenal matched that start by beating Lille 3-0 at the Emirates, where Bukayo Saka came off the bench to score once and set up another.
Inter’s miserable run in Europe continued with a 4-3 home loss to Club Brugge, their fourth straight Champions League defeat. Nicolo Tresoldi scored a hat-trick for the Belgian side. Barcelona, by contrast, came from behind to beat Galatasaray 4-1 in Istanbul, with Anthony Gordon scoring his first Champions League goal for the club.
