Liverpool opened their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win at Ipswich Town, though the details around the result raised immediate questions. Alexander Isak scored both goals inside the first 10 minutes, while head coach Andoni Iraola said it felt good to secure his first win in charge. Ipswich manager Gary O’Neil still called his team’s display excellent despite defeat. Tottenham’s season began with frustration as they were held 0-0 by Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle drew 2-2 with Bournemouth at St. James’ Park.
In Spain, Real Betis produced the standout result of the weekend by beating Real Madrid 1-0. Troy Parrott scored the only goal, and Madrid’s misery deepened when Kylian Mbappe missed a penalty in stoppage time.
Serie A brought both drama on the field and significant news off it. Torino came from behind to beat Fiorentina 2-1 through Rolando Mandragora and Che Adams, leaving Fiorentina with three defeats from three league games. Fabio Grosso admitted he understood he could be sacked. Como also staged a comeback, recovering from an early setback to beat Genoa 4-1, with Assane Diao scoring twice and further goals from Martin Baturina and Nico Paz.
The sharpest off-field development came from Naples, where director Giovanni Manna said Scott McTominay will be sidelined for at least six weeks after heart surgery. Inter president Beppe Marotta, meanwhile, revealed Barcelona had asked about Lautaro Martinez, but insisted the striker remains central to Inter’s future. Liverpool also confirmed the departure of sporting director Richard Hughes after less than three years.
