با توجه به شیوع سویه جدید ویروس کرونا (اومیکرون) که خاستگاه آن قاره آفریقا بوده و بیم شیوع آن در میان فوتبالیستها، گمانهزنیهایی در خصوص احتمال لغو برگزاری جام ملتهای قاره سیاه صورت گرفت. همچنین اتحادیه باشگاههای اروپا (ECA) با انتشار بیانیهای اعلام کرد که باشگاههای قاره سبز نباید برای آزاد گذاشتن بازیکنانشان جهت شرکت در این تورنمنت تحت فشار قرار بگیرند.
این سازمان همچنین با ارسال نامهای به معاون دبیر کل فیفا، نگرانیهای خود از بابت سفر لژیونرهای آفریقای شاغل در اروپا به قاره سیاه در بحبوحه شیوع کرونا را ابراز داشت. کنفدراسیون فوتبال آفریقا حاضر نشد به بیانیه اتحادیه باشگاههای اروپا واکنش نشان دهد اما لوکس سپتمبر مدیر روابط رسانهای این سازمان به نشریه گاردین گفت که جام ملتهای آفریقا در تاریخ مقرر یعنی روز نهم ژانویه سال ۲۰۲۲ برگزار خواهد شد.
تخمین زده میشود که در جام ملتهای آفریقای سال آینده، ۴۰ بازیکن از لیگ برتر انگلیس به اردوی تیمهای ملی حاضر در این تورنمنت فراخوانده شوند و این دقیقاً مصادف با فشردهترین مقطع از فصل فوتبال انگلیس است.
