Forgotten Manchester City star agrees new long-term deal: report
The Manchester City star has struggled for form but his club have issued a vote of confidence
Manchester City are preparing for the end of Pep Guardiola’s era, with the manager due to leave after the final game of the season against Aston Villa. Guardiola will go after a decade in charge and 17 major trophies, and Enzo Maresca has agreed in principle to succeed him. Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal will also depart at the end of the season, ending a 23-year association across two spells. At Chelsea, Xabi Alonso has been appointed manager on a four-year contract.
Arsenal are 90 minutes away from a first Premier League title in more than 20 years, with Riccardo Calafiori named in the starting lineup against Burnley as they looked to take a decisive step. Celtic clinched the Scottish Premiership title, while Inter sealed the Serie A crown to give president Beppe Marotta his first league title in that role. Serie A has confirmed the dates and kick-off times for Round 38, with Champions League qualification and survival still to be settled.
The referees’ body admitted Manchester United’s second goal in the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest should have been ruled out for handball. Newcastle beat West Ham 3-1. Aston Villa, preparing for City’s final game under Guardiola, are eight places better off than their expected Premier League position.
There were significant injury developments ahead of international duty. Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele will undergo treatment in the coming days for a muscle strain in his right calf, while Roma defender Evan Ndicka has suffered a season-ending injury. Spain midfielder Fermin Lopez is expected to miss the World Cup after fracturing his foot for Barcelona. Croatia included Luka Modric in their World Cup squad despite his fractured cheekbone, with the midfielder expected to be fit in time. Italy’s hopes of a late place at the tournament are over after Iran moved close to qualification.
