ریکاردو ساپینتو، سرمربی استقلال پیش از سفر این تیم به ترکیه برای برپایی اردو درباره حضور حسین حسینی در جمع بازیکنان تیمش گفت: «من حسین را دوست دارم و حسینی، سالها کاپیتان تیم بوده و برای استقلال بازی کرده و از نظر فنی هم قبول دارم. اگر حسینی نیاید به دو دروازهبان نیاز داریم.»
ساپینتو در ادامه گفت: «با هیات مدیره و مدیرعامل در تماس هستم. گزینههایم را میدهم اما شرایط برای بازیکنان خارجی زیاد خوب نیست، خانوادههایشان میترسند که به ایران بیایند. به خاطر شرایط فعلی بعضی فرصتها را از دست دادیم و آمدنشان راحت نیست ولی باید بازیکن بیاوریم.»
سرمربی استقلال همچنین درباره جذب عارف غلامی گفت: «عارف غلامی یکی از احتمالات است، مدیریت هم این موضوع را میداند و منتظرند که با او قرارداد ببندیم. صد البته که بازیکنان زیادی میخواهیم. میدانم که هیات مدیره تلاش میکند. پیش فصل را کمی دیرتر شروع کردیم و البته بازیکنان زیادی باید به ما اضافه شوند چون فصل سختی را در پیش داریم. حریفانمان قوی هستند و باید بازیکنانی را بیاوریم که برای تمامی جامها بجنگیم.»
او درباره بازگشتش به استقلال گفت: «همانطور که می دانید برای هواداران استقلال، برای یک ماموریت به اینجا آمدم. یکبار با استقلال جام بردیم و میخواهیم بیشتر ببریم. بازیکنان زیادی مدنظر داریم که بتوانیم در سطح حریفان باشیم ولی از این شرایط خیلی دور هستیم. باید تمام پستها تقویت شوند.»
